Callahan California Return to Ed's Home Page
Ed and Diane normally live in El Cerrito, California - a few miles across the Bay from San Francisco. Since Ed retired, they built a comfortable home in Callahan and spend several weeks each each year there relaxing, fishing and visiting family.
Callahan is the birthplace of Diane Farrington Wilson. Diane's great grandfather, Stephen Farrington, opened a blacksmith shop there in 1858 during the Gold Rush. The old blacksmith shop, Farrington Hotel, and store are still owned by Diane’s brother Steve. The only part of the building that is still opened is the post office, where Steve’s daughter Lisa is postmaster – the fourth generation Farrington to hold that position.
Callahan is at elevation 3000 feet, 300 miles north of El Cerrito, 90 miles south of Medford, Oregon and 120 miles east of Ferndale, the birthplace of Ed. However, there is an 8,000-foot mountain range, called the Trinity Alps, between Callahan and Ferndale and it is a four-hour drive today, over roads that have not improved much in the last 50 years. (In 1941 the lack of adequate roads in the area caused a patriotic rebellion against the States of California and Oregon. A new State called Jefferson was proposed. See www.jeffersonstate.com )
